What is Executive Summary?

An executive summary also known as management summary is a short version or section of a long report document produced for business purposes. It is a report or document that is summarized in such a way that readers can quickly get acquainted with what the author is speaking in the document. Executive summary usually consists of the background information, major problem discussed in the document, and conclusion. It is intended as an aid to decision-making by managers and has been described as the most important part of a business plan.

Executive summary is quite different from an abstract. Abstract is usually shorter and intends to provide a neutral overview rather than providing shortened version of the full document. Abstracts are extensively used in academic research where the concept of the executive summary would be meaningless. Executive summary is a sales pitch for outsourced call centers. The purpose of this summary is to convince the reader or customer with innovative idea of the company and urge them to make the deal.

 The first paragraph of the summary should be quite compelling and should interest readers while reading. The summary should be so interesting that the consumer can invest enough time reading it. It is an effective sales tool used to convince potential customers. It should grab the reader’s attention. It has to briefly hit the high points of your plan. It should point readers with questions requiring detailed responses to the full-length sections of your plan where they can get answers.

This process helps in delivering an elevator pitch and explaining what company is all about. Investors consider such information that determines whether to continue partnering with the company.
