What is Benchmarking?

Benchmark is the process of assessing the relative performance of a computer program or a set of programs to assess their relative performance by running a number of standard tests and trials. Benchmarking is used primarily to assess the performance characteristics of computer hardware and software. It provides a method of comparing the performance of various subsystems across different chip/system architectures.
