What is Independent Software Vendor?

An Independent Software Vendor (ISV) is a manufacturer and seller of software products that are compatible with one or more computer hardware and/or operating systems. As the name suggest, an ISV is neither owned nor controlled by a hardware manufacturer. ISV’s primary occupation is to distribute software. An ISV is also referred to as a software publisher.

In the market, there are companies like, Microsoft, IBM, Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and others, that make the platforms. Such companies not only encourage, but also lend support to ISVs with exclusive business partner programs. These programs permit the platform provider and the ISV to make the most of their joint strengths and transform them into surging business opportunities.

It should be noted that neither the hardware manufacturers that dispense software, like IBM and Unisys nor the users that may sell software or software products are ISVs.

ISVs usually offer products that the primary vendors do not provide. This allows the clients of the primary vendors to round out their software requirements. ISVs not only create price competition, but also escalate the pace of technology innovation in the market.

As opposed to software developed for a specific customer or organization, IVSs specialize in making and selling software, which can be designed for masses or exclusively targets the niche market. ISVs cater to a large market. Their software cover broad spectrum and. Examples of software provided by ISVs include: software for real estate brokers, for departmental stores, planning for healthcare personnel, barcode scanning, among others. Usually, ISVs sell their software as a commercial product; however, it is an asset of the software vendor. The end users cannot modify and distribute software as they are restricted by software license.
