What is Internet Telephony?

Internet Telephony is a communication medium through which we can initiate voice calls, messages, FAX, emails, and chats. Basically, we can initiate all types of communication channels using the internet telephony feature. Generally, there is the software behind the functions of internet telephony. The software uses the internet as its underlying source for establishing communication between the systems.


Traditionally, the companies used Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) method for conducting voice calls. As time went by, the companies started evaluating the benefits of making phone calls using Internet Telephony. The reason is Internet Telephony is far cheaper than VoIP communication systems. The conventional circuit-switched networks carried burdensome charges while internet telephony charged pretty low as it was powered by the internet. 


  • At the starting phase, internet telephony systems were not much effective since they mainly depended on the speed of the internet. Earlier, we did not have robust internet systems and the speed of the internet was not fast enough to suffice large call flow running on call centers. 

  • The prospects of internet telephony were still worth considering as it allowed various modes of communication and data transfer such as FAX and emails very easily. Plus, the software used for conducting the communications was usually quite cheap and there were hardly any failures related to operations. 

  • The only aspect that was a little challenging in the case of Internet Telephony systems is the speed of the internet. However, the companies are able to overcome this challenge as the internet systems became stronger and more secure in the last couple of years.

  • Internet Telephony is an advanced version of a network protocol that helps in delivering advanced multimedia communication operations using the internet. The VoIP and Internet Telephone are often used interchangeably but Internet Telephony has more features than VoIP. 

  • VoIP is limited to conducting only voice calls, plus some level of data transfer. However, Internet Telephony uses special software that can be integrated with any IP address for exchanging information over the internet. 

  • Here, the exchange of information means exchanging multimedia information that is more extensive in size and applications. Internet Telephony has become more powerful as the internet systems have evolved. 


Internet Telephone uses a packet switching function as opposed to the circuit-switching function used in traditional Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The main difference in the functions of both methods is the way the data is transmitted from one device to another. 


The traditional systems comprised converting analog signals into digital bit streams using a modem. These pieces of digital data are compressed and transmitted over the internet in the form of small IP packets.


Now that we have advanced Internet Telephony systems, we have superficial software that allows the gateways to send and receive information extensively and efficiently. The public switched telephone network (PSTN) is a more promising way of voice communication. 

It enables the systems to run communication from computer to computer, computer to telephone, and telephone to telephone very efficiently and cost-effectively. 


Conclusion: Hence, Internet Telephony is basically an enhanced VoIP function designed to render better telephone communication and other forms of communication like data transfer, emails, FAX, etc. The functionality is used extensively in call center agencies as they have to communicate to hundreds of customers/clients at a time and at the same time exchange information over customer-relationship management software.
