What is Call Detail Recording?

Call detail recording is abbreviated by the CDR. It is the process of recording a telephone call or text message. Depending on the organization logging the calls and the types of calls it handles, the data it contains, how it is organized, and how it is used vary. 


A CDR is a record of a wireless call that passes through the cell towers of a cellular or wireless service provider. Each portion of the call at each wireless tower receives its own CDR as the call transfers across towers. Text messages and Short Message Service (SMS) are also included in call detail data. On the other hand, landline calls are recorded separately in a toll log.

How Does a CDR (Call Detail Record) Operate?

As calls are placed and received, software applications generate call detail records. Typically, the data is stored in a database chosen by the application developer. Large service providers utilize proprietary software to store, retrieve, and analyze call detail data.


Employing open-source software, purchasing a software package, or paying a VOIP service provider a charge to give CDR capabilities are common practices for businesses using VOIP systems. 


The application assigns a call identity to any call that enters the network, whether it comes from a cellular tower or a VOIP connection (ID). As the call moves between cellular towers or phone extensions, this code stays with it.

What is the Importance of CDR?

A CDR log keeps track of every billable communication transmission on your phone system. This enables you to keep thorough records of how and when your phone system was used while also enabling phone companies to generate phone bills for you. They are generally used by businesses to assist with call reporting and billing.


Billing departments utilize CDRs to settle disagreements, keep track of how money is used, and record telephone system utilization. IT teams can utilize CDRs to ascertain whether or not phone service was interrupted.


CDRs may be used to identify call trends and gain an understanding of employee phone usage. A business may choose its management and employees more effectively by looking at patterns and trends.

What Does a Call Detail Recording Report  (CDR) Include?


A CDR report often presents data that has been divided up by the user or phone number. Specific metrics for a user, such as a call volume and minutes, can be shown in a CDR report generated for that user. A CDR for a phone number offers a bird's-eye view of how your phone system is used throughout the whole organization.


To find out who spends the most time on the phone, how long calls last, and how much money each person spends on every call, CDR records for specific employees are useful. Your business may benefit from better staff management and resource savings as a result of this.


On the other hand, a CDR record for a certain phone number might reveal how much money various businesses or organizations spend on calling minutes. This is advantageous if your business has several phone lines for various branches or locations. You may get an overview of the calling activity for your business from this kind of report.
